Trolling the DCU

Greetings fellow cosmic explorers, astro travellers, possible psychonauts and generally good natured people.

This month’s edition of In My Opinion will feature an in depth look and exploration of the fantastic, however oddly not celebrated D/C Animated Universe. So pull on those superhero tights, that red, black or green cape and prepare yourself for a fun-filled journey into a cosmic realm of multidimensional paradoxes, apocalyptic nightmares and endless dramas untold.

Cowls are optional.

The D/C Animated Universe is not really celebrated outside the internet and the collective imagination of the average comic book collector. This is again, in my opinion, a real shame. I really feel these films are a spectacular montage of animated films that encapsulate the spirit of the DC universe.

The essence of which the animated DC universe has captured and represented these characters and story lines is truer in theme than any of the modern films made in the last three decades.

This series of animated films which began in 2007 and continue to this day are primarily produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Consisting presently of 54 straight to video films, some original projects, some are adaptations of popular story lines taken straight from the pages of the comic books themselves.

Unfortunately this collection of animated films has only averaged $5.4 million per film since its inception. While it may not seem like a lot, it must be paying the bills just enough to keep the animators happy and fed because these films are still being produced and released.

I feel perhaps if Warner Brothers Animation were to spend more money on the advertising of these films, say during the previews of major motion pictures they would garnish more audience attention.

As it stands, I don’t even hear about these films being released until they suddenly appear in my movie streaming service ‘drop box’. That day however, is always a pleasant surprise because I really enjoy these films and even though I’ve probably missed one or two, I have been watching them since their early beginnings.

Presently I am watching Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, part two. I watched part one about 6 months ago and now I am eagerly awaiting part three. This doesn’t begin to describe how many of these films have been attention grabbers, many of them are quite graphic in their content regarding their usage of violence and emotional stakes, real nail biters.

In many ways, these animated films are more adult than the entirety of the Zack Snyder adaptations.

As a fan, this is something I greatly appreciate.

It is important to note that these films do not focus upon any one single D/C comic book figure but explore their entire catalogue of characters, so there is usually a story line for everyone.

If you are new to this series I suggest starting from the beginning but don’t forget to include titles such as, Superman: Doomsday and The Death of Superman, Superman/ Batman, Apocalypse, Batman under the Red Hood, Son of Batman & the Killing joke, Batman: hush, Justice League: War, Dark & World war 2, Justice League: the New Frontier, Wonder Woman, The Flashpoint Paradox, Green Lantern: Beware my power, Constantine
and many, many more…

This month’s edition of IMO is also being presented on my new webpage host, which I hope everyone will enjoy the increase in speed, and of course that always present Cosmic-book charm.

This transition hasn’t been easy and has eaten up most of my time for over a month, I might just blog about it in the future, we’ll see. So please allow for the occasional hiccup, the page is still a WIP but it’s getting closer to the final version where I can just concentrate on creating more artwork.
-Cheers
